Catatumbo Lightning: Earth's Lightning Capital

The phenomenon known as Catatumbo Lightning occurs around Lake Maracaibo in northwestern Venezuela, particularly near the southern part of the basin where the Catatumbo River enters the lake. The popular nickname "everlasting storm" is irresistible, but misleading: lightning does not flash continuously every night of the year. What makes the region exceptional is repetition. Satellite observations have shown that thunderstorms return with remarkable frequency, often developing after dark in roughly the same geographical setting. A major 2016 analysis of 16 years of Lightning Imaging Sensor observations identified Lake Maracaibo as Earth's top-ranked lightning hotspot, transforming a spectacular regional phenomenon into a global meteorological record holder.
